After passing the base temple, you begin a steep hike through the dense Sri Lankan forest. The path gains about 160 meters of elevation in total, and this middle stretch takes you over uneven steps under the canopy.

Along the way, you will discover the historic Pidurangala Cave Temple. This area served as a monastery over two millennia ago, offering a look into history before you reach the top.

Stone Staircase

15-20 minsSteep ascent

A series of uneven, ancient rock steps wind upward beneath the dense jungle canopy. The humidity makes this section feel harder than the elevation suggests. Pace yourself and drink plenty of water as you climb.

This long, natural rock overhang once sheltered Buddhist monks. It functioned as an active monastery during King Kashyapa's reign in the 5th century. You can safely put your shoes back on and remove your temple cover-ups once you reach this level.
